Ecclesiastes 3
2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
11He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
13And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
14I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
15That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
16¶And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
17I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
18I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
19For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
After 4 months of preparing a garden and experiencing new animals we as a family had been filled with much excitement from all the hard work. I was especially thrilled because even though the kids help me here and there and Zach on the weekends. I have been up from sun up to sun down to make this all happen. It is so neat to see a seed grow into a plant. I woke one morning to find all my corn rows dug up after sprouting, and my bean seeds dug out of the ground before even sprouting. I didn't get to discouraged, I went out and planted 4 more rows of corn and beans. A zucchini plant also just died. No, biggie I thought, that is why I planted so many.
My 15 chicks that we had were going to be 2 months in a few days. I did not have a chance to take some pictures of how big they were getting before all 15 of them got killed. They did not all get killed at once but randomly through out the last few weeks. I had five chicks from the first batch left and I was keeping them in the coop until they got bigger. The boys went out to do their usual feeding for the chicks to find all of them dead. Three chicks remaining in the coop with their heads bit off. I was pretty horrified. I guess raccoons like chicken heads and they manged to sqeeze through a tiny hole in the coop that we had temporarily fixed until we could get more wire. The raccoons figured out how to undo it and well they had a good dinner I'm sure.
I have been pondering the verse above and it is still one of my favorites. Even though it applies more to my life now then it ever has.

Geez, raccoons are a menace. Can you believe we had raccoons when we first moved into this house directly behind the hospital? A trap worked and a little target practice. Not sure if that would work for you out in the country though. You'll figure it all out and will have lots of wisdom to pass on to the boys.
I believe it Jen. Hopefully once I get my next batch of chicks we will be smarter then the raccoons. This first year has defiantly been a learning year!
